Illegal dumpsites | Ministry of the Environment conducts operation in Kanesatake

The Ministry of the Environment is conducting an operation in Kanesatake this week to counter the illegal dumping of potentially contaminated soils carried out “directly in fish habitat” on the shores of Lac des Deux-Montagnes.

Action was taken “in response to reports received regarding illegal transport and dumping of soil in this territory,” the Ministry of the Environment said in a statement released on Tuesday.

Over the months, there have been reports of illegal dumping and unauthorized backfilling in Kanesatake, on the shores of Lac des Deux Montagnes. These could have potentially been carried out “directly in fish habitat.”

“These activities are carried out without any authorization [et] threaten fish habitat,” the ministry said.

After verification, the ministry opened an investigation to “identify those responsible for these backfilling activities and to document the nature of the shortcomings on the banks, coastlines and in fish habitat.”

More details to come.
