The iconic England coach between 2001 and 2006, the Swede Sven-Göran Eriksson, died on Monday August 26, at the age of 76, from pancreatic cancer. “He passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by his family, at his home in Björkefors, near Sunne,” in Sweden, his agent, Bo Gustavsson, announced to AFP. “The family asks that their wish to grieve in privacy and not to be contacted be respected.”he added in a statement.
Sven-Göran Eriksson became England’s first foreign manager in 2001 and has managed the likes of David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard. In charge of the Three Lions until 2006, he notably led England to the quarter-finals of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and Euro 2004. At club level, “SGE”‘s achievements include a European Cup Winners’ Cup and a European Super Cup with Lazio (1999), a UEFA Cup with IFK Gothenburg (1982), an Italian league title with Lazio (2000) and three in Portugal with Benfica (1983, 1984 and 1991).
