(Ottawa) Traffic on Canada’s two largest rail lines is expected to resume Monday as the work stoppage is set to end.
Last Thursday, Canadian National Railway Company (CN) and Canadian Pacific Railway of Kansas City (CPKC) closed lines in metropolitan areas, locking out rail workers.
The lockout affected about 9,000 rail workers across the country.
The work stoppage ended just after midnight Monday after the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) issued a decision Saturday afternoon ordering both companies and their workers to return to work ahead of binding arbitration.
The president of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, the union representing rail workers, issued a statement Saturday protesting the CIRB decision and vowed to challenge it in court.
That same Saturday, CPKC Calgary released a statement saying it expected it would take weeks for the rail network to recover and longer after that for supply chains to stabilize.
