Part of Montrapon was devastated this Sunday, August 25. Two men were shot dead with automatic weapons in this district of Besançon.

The shots rang out in the afternoon. “Shortly after 3 p.m., several calls to 17 reported the presence of a helmeted individual, dressed all in black, riding a two-wheeled vehicle, who was firing an automatic weapon at two people, a 49-year-old man and a 30-year-old man, who died”the interdepartmental director of the national police of Doubs, Yves Cellier, told Agence France Presse (AFP).

Two men were fatally injured. One died on a sidewalk on Rue de l’Epitaphe. The other collapsed about twenty meters away, on a grassy area, our journalists on the scene confirmed.

We do not have any information regarding the suspect at this time. “The individual fled. It is still too early to say what caused this tragic event.”Yces Cellier further clarified to AFP.

The Besançon public prosecutor’s office and around thirty police officers are on the scene. The scientific police have started combing the area in search of shell casings that could help identify the shooter.

According to AFP, the organized and specialized crime division of the interdepartmental service of Besançon was seized of the investigation by the judicial authority.

“It’s a neighborhood where there are relatively frequent episodes of neighborhood complaints.”and which presents “dealing points”said Benoit Cipriani, deputy mayor of Besançon, to AFP. “There is activity related to drug trafficking. It is enough for someone to get out of prison a few times to complicate things”.
