Laurent Wauquiez was in Haute-Loire on Sunday, August 25, for his political comeback with, for the 13th edition, his ritual ascent of Mont-Mézenc, at an altitude of 1,753 meters. The new leader of the Republican deputies did not really mention his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election, but the 600 activists present took care of it for him. It is on everyone’s mind. For the time being, Laurent Wauquiez has focused his attacks on La France Insoumise and personally attacked Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

“We’re counting on you!”, right-wing activists shout about Laurent Wauquiez’s path. The fog lifts and reveals Mézenc, the opportunity for the new leader of the LR in the Assembly to outline his ambition, his only allusion to 2027: “I look at you and I feel this rage of the heart with which collective adventures are built and which I will need.”

Laurent Wauquiez, the obvious candidate of the right? The parliamentarians are divided, like Bruno Retailleau, who is giving himself time: “We are not yet in 2027. Laurent has many qualities, but today, the agenda is to ensure that there is a Prime Minister who is useful to France.” Isabelle Le Callennec, for her part, is less equivocal: “The values of the right are widely shared in the country. We need someone to embody them and Laurent could be that person.”

For most of the activists present, his candidacy is a must. “He has the best profile to be able to represent Les Républicains for this electoral deadline”one of them believes. “I am putting a lot of faith in Mr. Wauquiez, abounds another. He is an upright man, he is a man of convictions, of values. I hope he will be a candidate in 2027.” An activist continues: “We supported Eric Ciotti in the recent past and he disappointed us greatly. So we are very happy to see Laurent Wauquiez back on the national stage.”

“We will be behind him, we will support him and then we will see how things go.”

In the immediate future, current events take precedence, Laurent Wauquiez personally tackles Jean-Luc Mélenchon: “Just yesterday, in our country, a synagogue was attacked. Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s responsibility is immense in the trivialization of anti-Semitism, he who explained until recently, to please the fundamentalists, that anti-Semitism was residual in France. We will block La France Insoumise. The French did not vote to install Mélenchon at the head of the country.”
