A group of Montreal-area mayors believe the Quebec government has broken its promise to increase financial assistance for victims of torrential rains that hit the province earlier this month.
Last week, Premier François Legault hinted that he would expand the disaster relief program to include sewer backups, which are generally covered by private insurance.
The government announced this week, however, that only people whose sewers have backed up due to flooding from a nearby waterway will be eligible.
The organization, which brings together 82 municipalities, believes that this change does not make sense and that it will not help the many people whose basements were flooded when up to 200 millimetres of rain fell on certain regions of Quebec on August 9.
The group is calling on the Quebec government to expand the financial assistance program to include sewer backups, even in homes located far from waterways. But the government says it does not want the disaster assistance program to replace private insurance.
