After lying dormant for eight centuries, a new eruption has occurred in an Icelandic volcano. For three years, they have been following one another.
In Iceland, lava gushes from the depths on Friday, August 23. The magma, which seems to flow gently, draws a lunar landscape. The eruption began on Thursday, August 22 at 9:25 p.m. In a plane flying over the region, passengers witnessed this extraordinary spectacle. “This is the first time we’ve seen this.”assures a man. For eight centuries, this volcano remained dormant, but for three years, eruptions have been occurring one after another.
A new era of seismic activity is beginning, according to volcanologists. On board a helicopter, they made sure during the night that the nearest inhabitants were not threatened. “If things continue as we think, the lava should not flow towards the village of Grindavik”says Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson, professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland. The village was evacuated because strong winds were bringing ash and toxic fumes. After a first 4 km long crack, a second one appeared on Friday morning.
