Some viewers are turning to piracy because they find the rates of the new broadcaster of Ligue 1 football too high. Investigation.

Every weekend, millions of French people watch football on television. Their numbers could decrease, since the professional football league has awarded the rights to the French championship to two broadcasters: the British DAZN and BeIN Sports. To follow all the matches, you now have to pay at least 45 euros per month. To avoid paying, some use websites accessible via encrypted messaging, which broadcast the matches live with complete impunity.

“I don’t want to pay 40 euros because it’s very, very expensive. And what’s more, I think that we don’t necessarily respect the (…) football fan”confides a user. Another method, IPTV. Initially, it was about having access to paid channels, for a subscription. Today, it is possible to obtain codes illegally at low prices, giving access to pirated content.

Nearly 2 million people are fraudulently using IPTV in France. Users risk up to 300,000 euros in fines and three years in prison. Resellers could take advantage of this to steal sensitive information. As for broadcasters, they lose around 1 billion euros per year due to piracy.
