Iceland: an impressive volcanic eruption

In Iceland, fountains of fire appear at night. These are molten lava, because a volcano has awakened in the west of the country. The spectacle is unique for tourists from all over the world. “We saw that it was a volcanic eruption and it’s the coolest thing I’ve seen in my life”says Nora Elhaissouni, an American tourist. “We also have a volcano here, but we never see lava like that.”adds Shohei Miyamito, a Japanese tourist.

The eruption began at 9:25 p.m. on Thursday evening, August 22. It is the sixth in a few months, while for eight centuries, the volcanoes in this region had not experienced any activity. A new era is beginning according to volcanologists. They want to reassure the nearest villages. “If things continue as we think, the lava should not flow towards the village of Grindavik”says Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson, professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland. A village was evacuated to protect itself from the ash and toxic fumes.
