The player who caused the tackle that left Mathias Dantin quadriplegic in December 2022 in Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the Hautes-Pyrénées, during a UNSS rugby match, as part of a school program, will be tried on December 17 before the Tarbes criminal court, France Bleu Béarn Bigorre learned from a judicial source on Friday August 23.

Aged 17 at the time of the incident and now using a wheelchair, Mathias Dantin is fighting to raise awareness about the risks of injury and disability in rugby. He carried the Olympic flame in May 2024 in the Hautes-Pyrénées. His family launched an association, “Courage Mathias” to support him.

On December 14, 2022, in Bagnères-de-Bigorre, the 17-year-old fell on his neck after a tackle and became quadriplegic. Initially, the tackle was described as a“accident” by his entourage, but his parents finally filed a complaint against X in May 2023 for unintentional injuries.

According to information from France Bleu Béarn Bigorre, the player who committed the tackle, aged 18 at the time of the incident, was questioned on 16 August and chose to remain silent. He will be tried for “violence resulting in permanent disability”. On the other hand, the UNSS, which supervised the match during which the tackle took place, is not being prosecuted.
