The Israeli-Palestinian conflict worsened, in particular, with the creation under the aegis of the United Nations of the State of Israel in 1947. The latter never, in fact, accepted the coexistence of two States favored by the UN: Israel and the Palestinian territories. The UN, however, was the only organization with the necessary credibility and moral authority on the international level.
Remarkably, with a population equivalent to that of Quebec, or eight million, Israel has succeeded, paradoxically, in establishing one of the most powerful armies in the world, solidly supported, in fact unconditionally, by the United States, under both Republican and Democratic regimes. This support for Israel, apparently unconditional, is nevertheless not unanimous in the world. An eminent English scientist, Hawking, internationally known for his discoveries, himself Jewish, made a striking gesture to denounce the militaristic Israeli government, ostensibly anti-Palestinian. After initially accepting in 2012, according to The Worldto participate in an international scientific meeting held in Israel, he refused to go there in protest against the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. His decision caused a stir at the time and irritated Tel Aviv. But nothing fundamentally changed.
Closer to home, in October 2023, this Israeli government, reacting to the serious attack on Israel by Hamas, caused around 1,200 deaths, declared open and total war on this group. This is an unprecedented escalation of violence, given the military power of Israel, which is still well supplied with weapons by Washington. Result: we have just passed the milestone of 40,000 Palestinian deaths, the vast majority of them civilians, including an unusual number of children! Not to mention the wounded and the starving as well as the destruction of homes and minimal infrastructure of an already very poor society. History has clearly been repeating itself for 80 years. But much worse… With a real risk of igniting an entire region.
