De La Cruz steals show against Toronto Blue Jays, Cincinnati Reds win 11-7

Elly De La Cruz became the fifth major league player since 1901 to hit 20 home runs and steal 60 bases in a season, and the Cincinnati Reds erased a six-run deficit to beat the Blue Jays 11-7 on Wednesday.

Spencer Steer hit a two-run homer, and Noelvi Marte and Jonathan India also hit a walk-off homer to give the Reds two wins of three in the series.

De La Cruz hit the base four times. He stole third base in the fifth inning, his 60e of the season. He then added his 22e circuit of the season, a solo slap at the expense of Zach Pop in the eighth.

George Springer hit his 60e long ball as his team’s leadoff hitter in his career. The Blue Jays added two home runs off right-handed starter Nick Martinez in the first three innings, but were unable to hang on to their lead.

Spencer Horwitz drove in two runs with his eighth homer of the season in the first. Ernie Clement made it 6-0 with a three-run shot in the third.

Steer started the Reds’ comeback with a home run to Yariel Rodriguez in the fourth, then the Reds took a five-run lead in the fifth.

India chased Rodriguez with a run-scoring single and De La Cruz greeted Brendon Little (1-2) with a two-run single before scoring himself on Tyler Stephenson’s choice.

Santiago Espinal scored the final run of the inning — in which 11 batters were thrown — with a free pass to Erik Swanson with the bases loaded.

Marte and India followed with back-to-back homers off Swanson in the sixth, and Stephenson added a double.

Emilio Pagan (3-3) pitched one inning to earn the win.

Rodriguez allowed five runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings. He is winless in his last seven starts.

Martinez allowed a season-high six runs and as many hits in 4 1/3 innings.
