In Oise, the Pré farm already houses 900,000 laying hens, but could expand to accommodate 1.2 million. This project divides consumers.
In Éragny-sur-Epte (Oise), the Pré farm houses one of the largest chicken coops in France with 12 buildings and 900,000 laying hens. There will soon be 1.2 million because Bertrand Domet, the manager, is planning to expand. Thus, 320,000 more chickens will be raised on the ground, in closed buildings, without access to the outside, on three floors. “The chickens are free in the building, we have a system to collect the eggs, to distribute the feed, to distribute the water”explains Bertrand Domet.
Egg consumption increased by 5% in 2024, so he decided to invest 15 million euros for this method of barn farming. This expansion project is not unanimous among consumers, who are sensitive to egg quality and animal welfare. The mayor sees this project as an opportunity to boost his town. Eight jobs will be created if the extension is validated. Two public meetings are organized to gather the opinions of local residents.
