New York Qualifiers | Marino Advances to Round 2, Stakusic Eliminated

Canadian Rebecca Marino easily reached the second round of the US Open qualifying tournament on Tuesday, but her younger compatriot Marina Stakusic did not have the same success.




Marino gave no chance to the Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure, 929e in the world, winning in two sets of 6-2, 6-3, in less than an hour.

Ranked 139e Ranking in the WTA, Marino scored 12 aces and committed only three double faults while Bonaventure made six double faults without hitting a single ace.

Marino broke serve four times in seven opportunities and lost serve only once, in the fifth game of the second set. However, she recovered that break three games later.

Earlier in the day, Stakusic lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to Swiss Céline Naef, ranked 181.e in the WTA rankings.

Stakusic, 140e world player, had made a name for herself two weeks ago by beating the Russian Erika Andreeva, 89e in the world, in the first round of the National Bank Open, in Toronto.

The Canadian ran to her own demise, committing no less than 11 double faults. In addition, she converted only four of her 16 break points.

Quebecer Gabriel Diallo (144e), who won his first round match of qualifying on Monday evening, will face the Frenchman Titouan Droguet (148e) in the second round on Wednesday.
