Quebec Premier François Legault to Make Announcement on Temporary Immigration in Montreal

Prime Minister François Legault called the press to make an “important announcement regarding temporary immigration to Montreal” on Tuesday morning in the metropolis.

Mr. Legault is scheduled to speak to reporters at 10 a.m. He will be accompanied by the Minister of Immigration, Francisation and Integration, Christine Fréchette.

For several months, the Quebec government has been calling for a “significant and rapid” reduction in the number of temporary immigrants on its territory, arguing that the province has exceeded its reception capacity.

According to the Legault government, even though Quebec is a welcoming province for newcomers, the rapid increase in the number of temporary immigrants has added pressure on public services, such as the education and health networks.

This issue has led to a standoff between Quebec and Ottawa, who do not agree on the exact figures, among other things.

In the second quarter of 2024, Statistics Canada estimated that there were 597,140 non-permanent residents in Quebec, up 42% year-over-year.

The announcement that Mr. Legault will make on Tuesday must specifically concern the Montreal region.
