Russia Bans George and Amal Clooney’s Foundation

(Moscow) The foundation of American actor George Clooney and his wife, lawyer Amal Clooney, which fights for justice and equality, has been declared “undesirable” and therefore banned in Russia, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office announced on Monday.

The Clooney Foundation for Justice “conducts extensive work aimed at discrediting Russia, actively supporting false patriots and members of banned extremist and terrorist groups,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

“Under the cover of humanitarian ideas, these ‘fighters for justice’ […] “are pushing forward initiatives for criminal prosecutions against the highest Russian authorities,” he denounced.

“The activities of the Clooney Foundation for Justice NGO are declared undesirable on the territory of our country,” the statement concludes, titled: “The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office appreciated the acting talent of Hollywood activists.”

The Russian authorities have continued to step up their repression of any dissenting voice since launching their military offensive in Ukraine in February 2022.

In early August, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office declared the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation, which aims to promote democracy, as “undesirable.” In July, Russian news outlets The Moscow Times had been banned.
