Hurricane Ernesto expected to bring heavy rains to Newfoundland on Monday

An Environment Canada meteorologist warns Newfoundland is in for big waves and torrential rain starting Monday as Hurricane Ernesto must cross the region.

Chris Fogarty of the Canadian Hurricane Centre predicts the storm will weaken in intensity as it moves over the colder waters of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ernesto made landfall in Bermuda on Saturday and weakened to a tropical storm, but regained strength on Sunday and was reclassified as a hurricane by evening.

Mr Fogarty said thatErnesto would likely bring large waves to the Avalon Peninsula and heavy rain to the St. John’s area, which is expected to hit late Monday and continue Tuesday.

The meteorologist said people living near the coast should prepare for strong waves, and residents on the southern Avalon Peninsula should prepare for potential damage to wharves, breakwaters and other structures near the waterfront.

Mr Fogarty said the timing of the arrival ofErnesto Damage should be minimized as the storm is expected to pass through the region at low tide.

Due to the impending storm, Marine Atlantic has cancelled its 5:30 p.m. ferry between Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
