In Yvelines, a 16-year-old teenager discovered hanged in detention

A 16-year-old prisoner was found hanged on Sunday in his cell at the Porcheville juvenile prison in the Yvelines department, where he was serving a sentence, the Versailles public prosecutor said on Monday, August 19, when contacted by AFP.

An investigation has been opened to find out the causes of the minor’s death. The prisoner was convicted by the Créteil court in June for domestic violence, the prosecutor said without giving details on the length of his sentence. According to the website of the International Prison Observatory (IPO), in France, one death occurs “every few days [en détention]most often by suicide”In 2022, according to an OIP count, 125 incarcerated people died by suicide in prison.
