Elisabeth Rioux: No filter

Directed by Simon Sachel (A zoo like no other, Barmaids), this documentary series paints a portrait of entrepreneur, mother and content creator Elisabeth Rioux. Ambitious, the Quebecer tasted success by launching her swimwear brand at 17. A decade later, she’s still going strong, as this production by Trio Orange (Beautiful flower, Raspberry time) in collaboration with Amazon Studios. The camera shows the woman behind the empire, the steamy photoshoots, the glamorous trips around the world, and more.

Reconstruction: At the heart of the Montreal Canadiens

Directed by André St-Pierre (Second chance), this eight-part documentary series takes a behind-the-scenes look at the Habs’ 2023-24 schedule. The press release describes it as “a unique and intimate look” at the Montreal hockey club as it attempts to begin a recovery after several lean years. The program includes interviews with Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Mike Matheson and Juraj Slafkovsky. In French, Marc-André Grondin provides the narration. In English, the responsibility rests with George Stroumboulopoulos. A production of Groupe Fair-Play, the company behind 100 geniuses And Revolution.

The success of Revolution is surely not unrelated to the development of a fiction on the world of dancers. Written by Sarah-Maude Beauchesne (Beautiful flower, The forks) and produced by Patrice Ouimet (No appointment required, Squad 99), this series portrays a young hip-hop dance teacher named Marco (Jeremyah Mogni) who desperately wants to win a prestigious competition that arrives in Montreal to save the dance school run by his father. The dance numbers are choreographed by Katerine and Alexandre Leblanc, aka Team White, the big winners of Revolution in 2018.

Jean-Sébastien Girard and Véronique Cloutier host I was waiting for you.

Seven years later Your beautiful programVéronique Cloutier and Jean-Sébastien Girard team up again to celebrate popular culture from the 1960s to the 2000s in this show, whose title is inspired by an old Daniel Hétu song. In each hour-long session, the duo will welcome three guests who will discuss their memories of the Quebec artistic community, all accompanied by magazine clippings and audio and video excerpts. An original idea by Jean-Sébastien Girard and Charles-Alexandre Théorêt, in collaboration with KOTV (Zenith).

So Long, Marianne

So Long, Marianne (in French, To Marianne by Leonard)

Filmed partly in Montreal in 2023, this Canada-Greece-Norway co-production tells the love story between Leonard Cohen and Marianne, his famous muse. American actor and musician Alex Wolff (Oppenheimer) plays singer-songwriter, and Norwegian actress Thea Sofie Loch Næss (The Last Kingdom) plays Marianne. A few Quebecers appear in the credits, including Macha Grenon, Éric Bruneau, Kim Lévesque Lizotte and Robin L’Houmeau. In addition So Long, Marianneseveral songs from Cohen’s first two albums, released in 1967 and 1969, are directly inspired by her, including Bird on the Wire, Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye.

In addition to writing the texts, Pascale Renaud-Hébert stars in this miniseries that tells the story of Maggie (Guylaine Tremblay), a grandmother who has been looking after Zack, her 5-year-old grandson, since her daughter Corinne abandoned him to disappear with her toxic partner. Directed by Rafaël Ouellet (Arsenault & Sons), the six-episode work depicts the consequences of the return, three years later, of Corinne, now sober and single. This is a first fiction series for Pamplemousse Média, France Beaudoin’s production company.

Our Loves: The Saga of the Montreal Expos

Released in theaters in May, this nostalgic documentary explores key moments in the Expos’ rich and complex history, and the overall effort to bring major league baseball back to Montreal. The 92-minute feature film, directed by Robbie Hart (Revolution on ice, Patsy) includes interviews with Charles and Stephen Bronfman (former owners of the team), the 1981 and 1994 teams, magician Alain Choquette (a loyal fan) and businessman Pierre Boivin, former president and general manager of the Canadiens.

Inspired by true events, this series by director Podz (19-2) tells the story of Kevin (Charles-Aubey Houde), a debt collector who decides to escape the criminal underworld he knows when his girlfriend (Chanel Mings) becomes pregnant. The road will be long, arduous and bloody. Written by Ludovic Huot and Charles-Étienne Brassard, this eight-episode drama also stars Guy Nadon (Kevin’s gangster boss), Caroline Néron (his mother) and Claude Legault (his uncle). Another detail worth mentioning: Marc-André Grondin is one of the producers at Groupe Fair-Play.

The popularity of the original American format, available on YouTube, has exploded in the last two years, thanks to notable appearances by A-list stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Pedro Pascal, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. The concept is simple: celebrities answer the host’s questions while eating chicken wings accompanied by increasingly spicy sauces. The Quebec adaptation is hosted by Marc-André Grondin. Among the brave ones who will put their taste buds to the test: Katherine Levac, Pier-Luc Funk, Christine Morency and Stéphane Rousseau.

This documentary series should excite fans of the show. On call 24/7 on Télé-Québec. Directed by Bernard Lafrenière (In prison, The birth unit), it offers an incursion into the heart of the operating room of the CHU Sainte-Justine, where young patients who require specialized care converge. The 10 episodes of 30 minutes follow the nursing staff (surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, etc.), the children admitted and their families. Crave calls it a “human and touching” series. Translation: get out the tissues. An Attraction production (Live from the universe, The bosses!) in collaboration with Bell Media.
