Death of Alain Delon: a monument of French cinema
(France 2)

Alain Delon died during the night of Saturday 17 to Sunday 18 August at the age of 88. A look back at his career marked by masterpieces.

In 2019, the Cannes red carpet was rolled out for him. And for good reason: Alain Delon wrote one of the most beautiful pages of French cinema for over 60 years. He even received a Palme d’Or for his entire career, presented by his daughter Anouchka. Moved to tears, he was already saying goodbye to the public. “And now I know that what is difficult is to leave, but I will not leave without thanking you”he assured during his speech, his voice trembling with emotion.

Forgotten by awards despite a filmography of more than 80 films, his career began in 1957 with a small role in the film When the woman gets involved with which France discovers its angel face. The myth is on the move and its success will be boosted by the meeting with the filmmaker René Clément in the film Full Sun in 1960.

Over time, Alain Delon became an actor that everyone was fighting over. Little by little, he acquired a dual image: that of a sex symbol and a man of action, as in The Samurai directed by Jean-Pierre Melville in 1967.

He will even star alongside his biggest box-office rival, Jean-Paul Belmondo, in BorsalinoThe actor will bid farewell to cinema in 2008 in the role of Caesar in the film Asterix at the Olympic Games.
