Germany | At least 23 injured after Ferris wheel fire

(Berlin) Two gondolas of a Ferris wheel caught fire at a music festival near Leipzig in eastern Germany. Twenty-three people were injured.


The news was reported by the German news agency dpa on Sunday.

The fire started in a gondola and spread to a second one overnight from Saturday to Sunday, police said. Four people were burned and one was injured after falling. Others, including rescue workers and at least four police officers, are to be examined in hospital for possible smoke inhalation, dpa reported.

The accident took place at the Highfield festival at Lake Stoermthaler near Leipzig. Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.

As of Sunday morning, the police were still unable to provide any concrete information on the condition of the injured. The exact number of victims had also not been determined, dpa reported.

The operator of the Ferris wheel told dpa that no passengers were sitting in the gondola where the fire broke out.
