Located off the east coast of Spain, the Balearic archipelago was hit by storm Dana on Thursday, August 15. People had to be evacuated, cars were overturned and houses were flooded.
The Balearic Islands are under water, far from the picture postcard image. In Es Mercadal, in the centre of the island of Menorca (Spain), cars were overturned by the force of the water, rammed, in front of terrified tourists and locals, surprised by the rapid rise in water levels. On Thursday 15 August, torrential rains fell. The torrent that crosses the town overflowed, drowning streets and flooding homes. The Menorca firefighters carried out a dozen evacuations by helicopter.
Storm Dana also swept through Majorca, the largest island in the archipelago. The moorings of many sailboats broke, and boaters were caught out at sea by the arrival of the wind. In airports, around fifty flights were cancelled, and many tourists, particularly French ones, are struggling to return. The situation is gradually returning to order on Friday evening, but some flights to France are still delayed or cancelled.
