The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched the maximum alert level in the face of the spread of mpox in Africa. In France, the government also put in place a state of maximum vigilance on Friday, August 16.

Two years after the global epidemic, MPOX, formerly called monkeypox, is striking again in Africa, with a new, more dangerous strain. The virus causes skin rashes accompanied by fever. It is possible to be infected after direct contact with an infected animal or with a contaminated object. Between humans, prolonged physical contact, such as sexual intercourse or the projection of respiratory droplets, is sufficient.

With the mortality rate of the new variant estimated at 3.6%, the World Health Organization is alerting governments around the world. “The risk of spread in Africa and everywhere in the world is very worrying”says the WHO Director General, who is calling for an international response to stop the epidemic. In Europe, a first case was detected in Sweden on Thursday, August 15, and the European Union fears the emergence of new cases. For the time being, no medication can cure the disease, only an antiviral currently being evaluated can relieve symptoms for severe forms. According to health authorities, vaccination is the most effective way to limit the epidemic. France placed its health system on maximum alert on Friday, August 16.
