For the first time in Europe, a patient with the new CLADE 1 variant of the mpox virus has just been diagnosed in Sweden. While the WHO has issued maximum alert worldwide, doctors are reassuring.

This is a first on European soil. A patient with the new CLADE 1 variant of mpox, formerly called monkeypox, has just been diagnosed in Sweden. CLADE 1 is a more contagious and deadly variant than the strains known so far. It manifests itself by fever and rashes all over the body. It is transmitted by close contact and sexually.

This new strain is experiencing an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Faced with this resurgence, the World Health Organization (WHO) has triggered maximum alert worldwide. Since January 2022, 38,465 cases have been recorded in Africa, including 1,456 deaths. On the morning of Friday, August 16, Pakistan also announced its first patient. Are we heading towards a new pandemic? Doctors are reassuring. Two years ago, an effective vaccine had made it possible to stop the start of an epidemic. In Denmark, the Bavarian Nordic laboratory has said it is ready to produce 10 million doses by 2025.
