A historic fall. The French women’s football team has fallen from 2nd to 10th place in the Fifa rankings, according to the update published on Friday, August 16, a few days after the end of the 2024 Olympic Games. Les Bleues have thus equaled their worst ranking since its introduction in July 2003. The United States, winners of the Olympic football tournament, have regained the top spot in the rankings, just ahead of England, which has gained one place despite its absence from the Olympic Games, and Spain, which has lost two places after failing in the bronze medal match against Germany.
The French women were nevertheless on a very good dynamic with a second place in the Fifa ranking on June 14, the best ranking in its history. A place that the Blues owe to their victory against Germany in the semi-final of the League of Nations and their qualification for the final, lost against Spain. They had also won against England in the first leg of the Euro 2025 qualification.
If France ultimately lost eight places in the space of two months, it is mainly due to its recent defeats against Canada, 8th in the Fifa rankings, in the group stage of the Olympics, against Brazil, 9th, in the quarter-finals, and against Ireland, 25th, in the qualifying match for Euro 2025, 25th. But also its narrow victories against Colombia, 22nd in the world, and New Zealand, 28th, during the Games. When Hervé Renard arrived, the French women’s team was ranked 5th by Fifa.
