Former Minister and President of the National Assembly Louis Mermaz has died

Former President of the National Assembly and former minister Louis Mermaz has died at the age of 92, announced the President of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, on X on Thursday 15 August, saluting his “quick mind”.[Il] left us at his home in Essonne. (…) His commitment to serving our country has marked its history”also estimated on the social network François Durovray, the president of the departmental council of Essonne. “I loved Louis Mermaz for his intelligence, his subtlety, his composure in the face of the most difficult situations”reacted the former socialist president François Hollande in a press release.

This former history teacher became a member of parliament for Isère in 1967 and joined the national leadership of the PS in 1971. A short-lived Minister of Transport under François Mitterrand in 1981, he was elected President of the National Assembly later that year, a position he held until 1986. He became Minister of Transport again in 1988, then Minister of Agriculture in 1990, before being appointed government spokesperson and Minister for Relations with Parliament in 1992. Re-elected as a French MP in 1997, he was also a senator between 2001 and 2011.
