The Court of Quebec will be able to count on 12 new judges to deliver justice. Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette announced their appointment on Thursday.
This new group of judges is made up of eight women and four men.
Three will be assigned to civil cases, one to the youth division and six to criminal. Two judges will take on the challenge of sitting in all three divisions at once: Sarah Plamondon in Val d’Or, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, and Éric Morin in Matane, in Bas-Saint-Laurent. These appointments should help relieve congestion in the criminal courts.
Several have worked during their careers within the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP), including Rachelle Pitre, better known to the public for her media appearances as chief prosecutor. She will assume her duties mainly in the Criminal and Penal Division in Longueuil.
The others who will soon be wearing the robes of judges at the Court of Quebec are Marie-Pierre Charland, Melissa De Petrillo, Marie-Ève Landreville, Anne Martin, Rose-Mélanie Drivod, Mileyne Grégoire, François Blanchette, David Pecho and Éric Poudrier.
The Minister of Justice of Quebec has the power to appoint the judges of the Court of Quebec. Those of the Superior Court are chosen by the federal Minister of Justice.
