François Legault Considers Compensating Victims of Sewer Backups Following the Passage of “Debby”

The Quebec government is considering compensating households that suffered sewer backups when torrential rains caused by the storm hit Debby hit the province last Friday. Premier François Legault made the announcement while visiting the municipality of Louiseville, in Mauricie, to see the damage following the floods that particularly affected the town and the region.

“If there have been exceptionally many sewer backups due to the flooding, I think common sense tells us that we should perhaps expand the program. It’s something we’re looking at,” said François Legault.

Even though the Prime Minister did not make a concrete announcement regarding compensation for victims, Louiseville Mayor Yvon Deshaies said he was “satisfied” with the meeting with Mr. Legault. “He came, we asked him what we want, he will look at the program.” Mr. Deshaies asked in particular that “if [les frais après sinistre] cost $30,000 and the person is insured for $10,000, let’s give him the $20,000.”
