Japan lifted its “megaseism” alert, which had been in effect for a week, on Thursday, August 15. “Since no anomalies have been detected in seismic activity and crustal deformation, the special call for special attention is over but this does not mean that the risk [d’un tremblement de terre majeur] was eliminated”according to Minister Yoshifumi Matsumura at a press briefing. “We ask [à la population] to continue to be attentive to these daily precautions and to remain vigilant in the face of a mega-earthquake which could occur at any time and anywhere.”

Japan’s meteorological agency issued a warning last Thursday after a 7.1-magnitude quake injured 15 people in the south of the country. In areas that could be hit hardest, including western Kochi on the island of Shikoku, thousands of tourists have canceled hotel reservations as the archipelago is in its annual holiday period.
