A man was killed by a police officer’s gunfire during a clash between rioters and police in Thio on Thursday, August 15 in New Caledonia, announced the Noumea prosecutor, Yves Dupas. This brings to eleven the number of deaths, including two gendarmes, since the start of the crisis in the archipelago in May.

A gendarme was injured after a stone was thrown at his face during a bridge clearing operation in Thio, a town 120 km north of Noumea. The gendarmes were then attacked and shot several times, according to the prosecutor. Several shots were then fired in response by the gendarmes: two people were injured, one of whom died during his transfer to hospital.

“Several investigations” have been opened to shed light on this death, reported Yves Dupas, while security has not been fully restored in New Caledonia. A curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. is still in force on the archipelago.
