A documentary on the BlackBerry, proposes Mark Wahlberg’s production company

Mark Wahlberg’s documentary production company will film what it is already billing as “the true story of the BlackBerry.”


Actor Wahlberg’s production company Unrealistic Ideas has announced it is moving forward with a feature-length documentary focusing on the history of the Waterloo, Ontario-based smartphone maker.

The production company says the as-yet-untitled documentary will draw on interviews with former executives and employees of the company formerly known as Research In Motion (RIM) to chronicle the rise and fall of the handheld device in the mobile phone wars.

Mark Wahlberg’s production company is behind several notable HBO projects, including the documentary series McMillions And Movie Pass, Movie Crashwhich recalls the origins of the popular cinema subscription.

Last year, the BlackBerry was the focus of a satirical comedy by Canadian director Matt Johnson that won awards and critical acclaim. But some in the local tech community felt the writers played a little too loosely with the facts.

The documentary will be directed by filmmaker Eddie Schmidt, director of the series Chelsea Does and producer of feature-length documentaries This Film is Not Yet Ratedon the film rating system in the United States, and the film Twist of Faith.

The BlackBerry documentary, which has not yet been set for release, will be produced in cooperation with Canadian technology company Viral Nation. The Mississauga, Ont.-based company has partnered with the RIM Alumni Association to develop an online archive of BlackBerry history and has initially been tossing the idea around with various documentary filmmakers.
