Madonna to celebrate 66th birthday with private visit to Pompeii

(Rome) Madonna will celebrate her 66th birthdaye birthday with a private tour of the famous Italian archaeological site of Pompeii.

Naples prefect Michele Di Bari has denied speculation in Italian media that the singer was planning a big birthday party in the ancient city, which was destroyed in 79 AD by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

But he confirmed that Madonna was planning a private evening visit on Friday, of a purely cultural nature.

He told reporters that she loved the archaeological site and was looking forward to going there.

For decades, archaeologists have been excavating the ruins of Pompeii, regularly discovering beautifully preserved frescoes, pottery and, just this week, a new set of human remains.

Madonna, whose family is from the Italian region of Abruzzo, has been in Italy for several days, reportedly as a guest of designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.

On Tuesday night, she was filmed strolling around the resort of Portofino, dressed in black lace and carrying an umbrella. She later had dinner with her two daughters and entourage at Portofino’s famous Puny restaurant on the main square.

Madonna ended her “Celebration” tour in May with a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.

The Associated Press did not immediately respond to an email sent to a Madonna publicist.
