While firefighters have been battling the flames for three days, the charred body of a sixty-year-old woman was found on Tuesday, August 13, in a factory near Athens.

10,000 hectares have gone up in smoke, and the material damage is considerable. From the sky, above Varnavas (Greece), tons of water are being poured onto the fire, which has refused to go out since Sunday, August 11. This is the third time, on Tuesday, August 13, that water has been thrown into a ravine. Villagers and professional firefighters are exhausting themselves fighting the fire.I’ve been helping out for three days now,” assures a local resident.

The wind has died down, but it is still there and continues to fan the embers. “It will probably take about ten days for it to stop completely,” explains Giannis Moniakis, from the civil protection. The Varnavas region was the first to be hit by the fire. Thousands of hectares burned and dozens of houses were destroyed.

While most homes were preserved, many power lines fell to the ground, affecting more than 1,000 people in the area.
