Toronto International Film Festival | Saturday Night Live fiction film to have Canadian premiere

(Toronto) Jason Reitman’s column on the beginnings of the cult American show Saturday Night Live will have its Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).


Organizers announced Tuesday that “Saturday Night” is among 20 films added to the lineup, including Francis Ford Coppola’s ambitious project Megalopolisstarring Adam Driver, which was poorly received by critics after its world premiere at Cannes in May.

Other major titles include Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature, The Room Next Doorabout a mother and daughter separated by a misunderstanding, starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton.

Canadian additions include the first feature film by Marie-Hélène Viens and Philippe Lupien, You are not alonestarring Pier-Luc Funk, Marianne Fortier, François Papineau, Sandrine Bisson, Blaise Tardif and Micheline Lanctôt. The film is set to be released in Quebec theaters on October 18.

We already knew that Sophie Deraspe’s most recent film, Shepherd, filmed in the Alps, would have its world premiere at TIFF.

The “In Conversation With…” series will feature live interviews with Cate Blanchett, Zoe Saldaña, Steven Soderbergh, Hyun Bin and Lee Dong-wook.

Organizers said Tuesday that filmmakers Mina Shum and Damien Chazelle will attend special screenings of their respective films. Bittersweet Happiness And Whiplash.

The “Visionaries” series will feature onstage presentations by Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, the screenwriter of Doctor Who Steven Moffat and Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón.

TIFF will take place from September 5 to 15.
