Los Angeles Olympics: Lakers arena, UCLA campus… Discover five legendary sites that will host the events in 2028

Los Angeles has already announced several sites where the events of the next Olympic Games will take place. Franceinfo presents the most emblematic sites.

After the success of the Paris Olympics, and before the Paralympic Games begin, minds are already turning to the next Olympic Games, in Los Angeles in 2028. The organizers have already revealed the names of some of the chosen sites, which will be far removed from the landscapes of the Paris Olympics, on the Place de la Concorde, at Les Invalides or at the Château de Versailles. But these will still be highly symbolic places for fans of American sports.

The historic Coliseum stadium

The United States, and more specifically Los Angeles, are used to the Olympic Games. The Californian city has already hosted them twice, in 1932 and 1984. Each time, the Coliseum was used, and it will be a third time in 2028. Built in 1923 as a tribute to the soldiers of the First World War, it is the largest stadium in the city, with a capacity of more than 77,000 seats, and one of the most legendary in the United States.

Normally, it hosts the USC Trojans college football team. For the next Games, it will host track and field, the premier sport of the Olympics, and will also serve as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies, just like SoFi Stadium. The Coliseum will thus become the only stadium to host track and field competitions at three Olympic Games.

SoFi Stadium, an ultramodern venue transformed into an Olympic swimming pool

SoFi Stadium, with its giant roof and futuristic appearance, is very recent since it was inaugurated in 2020, and has a construction cost of nearly 5 billion dollars. The Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers, two NFL (American football) franchises, reside there year-round. The stadium also hosted the 2022 edition of the Super Bowl, won “at home” by the Rams. For the 2028 Olympic Games, the Americans plan to transform this stadium into an ultramodern Olympic swimming pool. With its 38,000 seats, it is presented as the largest swimming venue in the history of the Olympic Games.

Crypto.com Arena, the Lakers’ home

Formerly the Staples Center, the Crypto.com Arena will host gymnastics and trampoline events. This legendary venue with nearly 20,000 seats is known worldwide for hosting games of the Los Angeles Lakers, the second most successful NBA franchise behind the Boston Celtics, and where megastar Lebron James currently plays. The Crypto.com Arena is also home to the Sparks, a WNBA franchise (the women’s equivalent of the NBA), and the Kings ice hockey franchise. More than 250 events take place there each year, including concerts, boxing, and tennis.

The Intuit Dome, the Clippers’ new home

The basketball players who will participate in the next Olympics will have the chance to tread the same court as the Los Angeles Clippers, that of the Intuit Dome. This brand new multi-purpose arena will be used by the other NBA franchise of the City of Angels starting in October, after several years of renovation. With its 18,000 seats, the Intuit Dome is not the largest basketball arena in the United States, but it does have a giant circular screen that is unique in the world.

UCLA campus, future Olympic village

Unlike the Paris Games and its Olympic Village, Los Angeles has announced that no infrastructure will be built for the event. The city plans to use existing sites only. To house the athletes, it was therefore decided to use the campus of UCLA, a prestigious university renowned for research and education.
