An unusual experiment gave rise to a saxophone concert around the works of the Sainte-Croix museum in Poitiers. (Sax en Mouvement Festival / Habanera academy)

Imagine yourself strolling between 19th century works of art, remains from the Middle Ages, and all to the captivating sound of saxophones. This is a unique experience offered by the Sainte-Croix Museum in Poitiers as part of the Saxophone en mouvement festival on August 11. The concept is surprising to say the least: combining visual arts with musical arts for a total immersion.

Far from the usual silence found in museums, here, the works are contemplated to the rhythm of saxophones. Throughout the visit, the arts respond to each other and merge. We no longer know very well whether we are attending a concert or a museum visit, and it is precisely this blur that makes the experience so magical. The idea of this unusual meeting?Bringing together two types of works: paintings and musical works, by matching them by period, history, and even style”explains the president of the Saxophone Event association, Gilles Tressos.

The musicians of the Habanera Academy, young virtuosos in training, also have an extraordinary experience. “It’s very intimidating, but what I like is being able to imagine an atmosphere, to create one by drawing inspiration from what surrounds me, in sound and image,” confides one of the interpreters, Lucille Savoye.

Living until the end of the event, the artist Alphée Carrau created a live painting, echoing the pieces played. A sort of mirror between music and painting, where each art becomes in turn a source and a reflection.

And it’s not over yet! The next event offered by the Sainte-Croix museum, scheduled for Sunday, September 1, promises to be just as original: a concert combining drums, double bass, saxophone and other musical instruments.

The evening ends with a traditional ball with buffet accompanied by an exhibition on the traditions of Poitou. A great way to extend this encounter between the arts and genres.
