A woman and an 11-year-old girl were hospitalised on Monday after being stabbed in Leicester Square, a busy area of central London, police said, and a man was arrested.
“Officers are at the scene of a knife attack in Leicester Square. A man has been arrested and is in custody,” London police said in a statement.
“Two victims, an 11-year-old girl and a 34-year-old woman, were taken to hospital,” she added.
A London Ambulance spokesman said the service was called at 11.36am and both victims were taken to a trauma centre.
The United Kingdom, where the carrying of firearms is strictly restricted, is experiencing a resurgence of knife violence (attacks on people, burglaries, etc.), which often involves young people.
They increased by 7%, to almost 50,000 cases last year, compared to 2022, and have almost doubled in ten years, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
