A historic hat-trick. Already a bronze medalist in the 5,000m and 10,000m, Sifan Hassan won the women’s marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Sunday, August 11, after 2 hours 22 and 55 seconds, shattering the Olympic record previously held by Tiki Gelana in 2 hours 23 and 7 seconds since 2012 and the London Games.

The leading pack, made up of four marathon runners, with the Kenyans Sharon Lokedi and Hellen Obiri and the Ethiopian Tigst Assefa, was separated at the end of the suspense, in a sprint where Assefa and Hassan broke away at the finish. Hellen Obiri therefore won the bronze medal, behind Tigst Assefa in silver and therefore Sifan Hassan, the new Olympic marathon champion.
