Health care and language

Recently, there have been many controversies regarding health care and language.

During my recovery from surgery, I spent about eight days at the University of Montreal Hospital Center (CHUM). I was in room 1446 on the 14e floor and had a magnificent view of the Olympic Stadium (1976), a work of the French architect Roger Taillibert, and of the John Molson building (1786), one of the oldest breweries in North America owned by an Englishman.

That said, as an English speaker, at no point did I feel disrespected because of my limited French skills.

The communications from the employees who treated me proved the statement of the Minister of Health, Minister of the French Language and Minister responsible for relations with English-speaking Quebecers:

“The intention of the Quebec government has never been to restrict access to health care for English-speaking Quebecers…” (Montreal GazetteAugust 9, 2024)
