France equaled its Atlanta Games record of 15 gold medals thanks to the French volleyball team’s title against Poland on Saturday, August 10. While there are still several chances for a gold medal, the French are already doing as well as they did in 1996.

French volleyball players have offered France its 15th gold medal. Until now, the French rugby 7s team, Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt (mountain biking), Léon Marchand (swimming, 400m medley, 200m breaststroke, 200m butterfly, 200m medley), Nicolas Gestin (canoeing), Manon Apithy-Brunet (fencing), Cassandre Beaugrand (triathlon), Teddy Riner (judo), Joris Daudet (BMX racing), the French mixed judo team, Kauli Vaast (surfing) and Benjamin Thomas (omnium) had won gold for France.

The French record at these home Games has so far reached 58 medals, with the silver medal for the French handball players: 15 gold, 21 silver and 22 bronze, well above the previous record, achieved in Beijing in 2008 (43).

At the Paris Games in 1900 the second of the modern era, contested over five months France won 27 gold medals, but its delegation represented almost half of the thousand participants and some events were not sporting.
