Review of the novel “Hanter Villeray” by Gabrielle Caron

What is a ghost’s life? We discover it with a smile throughout the pages, at the same time as Maude, a young thirty-something who has just left the world of mortals to find herself haunting… her apartment in Villeray. She will learn every day about the conditions of this astonishing afterlife, but above all, she will discover that she was loved and that you have to know how to forgive yourself. This personal journey approached with a well-measured humor is punctuated as much by happy encounters as by meditative hours bathed in the late afternoon sun. In this first novel, Gabrielle Caron, who we already know well as a humorist and columnist, plays down death and its causes – because Maude has no idea of the reasons for her death. And what if it didn’t really matter? The final scene, however, leaves us perplexed and could certainly have been treated differently.
