CF Montreal lost its first League Cup playoff game in history 2-0 on Friday against the Union in Philadelphia.
In the round of 16, the Union will face FC Cincinnati, second in the MLS East, or Santos Laguna, on August 12.
This was the third game between the Bleu-blanc-noir and the Union this year, with CF Montreal now posting a 1-1-1 record.
Before this defeat, there had been a 2-2 draw on 1er June, abroad, then a 4-2 victory in Montreal, on June 29.
In MLS, the two teams are on 27 points from 25 games, on the verge of a playoff spot in the East.
After losing in the group stage in 2023, the Montreal club this time secured its place in the playoffs thanks to a 3-2 win in regulation time against Atlético de San Luis last Tuesday at Saputo Stadium, combined with San Luis’ 1-1 (5-4) loss against Orlando City on Sunday.
Last year, the Union reached the semi-finals of the League Cup.
