Actress Daisy Ridley, heroine of the latest “Star Wars” trilogy, suffers from a thyroid condition

The 32-year-old British star told Women’s Health magazine that she has Graves’ disease, which is more common in women.

Daisy Ridley, Rey in the last trilogy Star Warsannounced that she has a disease known as Graves’ disease. The condition causes the gland to overproduce hormones thyroid. “This is the first time I’m sharing this”explained the actress in an interview with the magazine Women’s Health published on August 6, 2024.

Her diagnosis dates back to September 2023. Symptoms include increased heart rate, weight loss, fatigue and hand tremors. Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. It affects women more than men, according to the European Thyroid Association.

Other famous people who have suffered from the disease include rapper Missy Elliott and former First Lady Barbara Bush. “All the statistics on undiagnosed or underdiagnosed women, we have to agree to say: ‘I really don’t feel well’“, said Daisy Ridley. “It’s okay to not feel good.”

The actress did not immediately realize that she was ill. “I thought to myself that I had just played a very stressful role and that was probably why I felt bad.”she said. At the time, she was coming off the set of Magpiea film in which she plays a mother confronted with the difficulties of her relationship.

Vegetarian, the actress of Star Wars said she has switched to a gluten-free diet since her diagnosis. “I’m not super strict about it, but in general, cutting out gluten makes me feel better,” she said.

The Last Trilogy Star Wars ended in 2019. Since then, Disney has promised three new feature films about the galactic universe created by George Lucas, one of which is to be carried by Daisy Ridley. The actress is currently showing in the movie Facing the Sea: The Story of Trudy Ederlethe first woman to swim the English Channel.
