(Mexico City) The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador, announced Monday that he had contracted COVID-19 for the second time, and that he was experiencing mild symptoms.
“I am contaminated with COVID-19 and even if the symptoms are mild, I will remain in isolation, I will only do office work and I will communicate virtually” for the moment, tweeted the head of state.
The president, who rarely wears the mask, spoke hoarse at his daily press conference on Monday morning and said he planned to get tested, even though he thought he had the flu.
Mr. Lopez Obrador, 68, had already contracted the coronavirus in January 2021 and had also suffered from mild symptoms there. He received the AstraZeneca vaccine last year as well as a booster dose on December 7.
Mexico, a country of 129 million inhabitants, passed the threshold of 300,000 deaths from COVID-19 on January 8 since the start of the pandemic. The Omicron variant, first detected on December 3 in the country, has become predominant there.
The left-wing government has recognized the rebound in the pandemic, but refuses to suspend activities as hospitalizations and deaths have been brought under control.
