In Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as head of the caretaker government

Just days after the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as Bangladesh’s interim head of government on Thursday, August 8. “I will defend, support and protect the Constitution”he said during the swearing-in ceremony at the presidential palace in the capital Dhaka, adding that he would fulfill his duties “with sincerity”.

Officially, the 84-year-old economist will serve as “chief adviser” to the government. He was joined by politicians, civil society figures, generals and diplomats. A dozen members of the new government, who are officially “advisers” and not ministers, also took the oath. Among them were Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, the main leaders of the student movement that sparked the protests in early July that led to Sheikh Hasina’s helicopter flight on Monday.
