Marie-Josée Roig, former mayor of Avignon and former minister under Jacques Chirac, died at the age of 86, France Bleu Vaucluse reported on Wednesday, August 7. She had been ill for several months.

Marie-Josée Roig was RPR then UMP mayor of Avignon from 1995 until 2014. She was also president of the Greater Avignon urban community between 2001 and 2014. This former literature teacher was also twice elected as a member of parliament in the first constituency of Vaucluse, first in 1993 until 1997 and then from 2002 to 2004.

Marie-Josée Roig then served as Minister of Family and Children for eight months in 2004, under Jacques Chirac in the government of Jean-Pierre Raffarin. She was then appointed Minister Delegate of the Interior to the Minister of the Interior until May 2005.
