The risk of forest fires is very high in the south-east and particularly in the Var. Forest rangers and police officers are increasing patrols to remind walkers of the prohibitions.
The Maures massif (Var) has been at risk of severe fire for several days. A fire can start at any time. It is therefore necessary to raise awareness. Regional forest rangers travel 30 kilometers per day to inform walkers of the conditions for accessing the massif. Their number 1 enemy: cigarettes. With the high temperatures and wind, everything can quickly catch fire.
Danger lurks throughout the region. On Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 August, the calanques of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) were closed to access. In the heart of the forests, nearly 900 firefighters are ready to respond to the slightest alert. They are present throughout the territory to neutralize the outbreaks of fire as quickly as possible. “As soon as smoke appears, you have several lookouts who will confirm its presence. We will send proximity devices”explains Lieutenant Bruno Isnard, head of the forest fire unit of group 3 Aubagne. The authorities are calling for caution. Nine out of ten vegetation fires are of human origin.
