There will be a hint of KO floating over the Paris Olympics… The twelfth day of the Olympic Games, this Wednesday, August 7, will offer the French team many high-stakes jousts for the medal, or for survival in the competition. The French medal count could still climb, and new podium prospects materialize for the rest of the week.

The three events not to be missed: boxing, women’s team pursuit, mixed marathon walk relay

France is thus already assured of a new medal, thanks to Sofiane Oumiha. The Toulouse boxer is in the -63.5 kilos final (10:34 p.m., announced on France 2) where the Cuban Erislandy Alvarez Borges awaits him in the setting of Roland-Garros and the Philippe-Chatrier court. Oumiha will try to make us forget his Olympic frustrations, from the silver in Rio 2016 to the premature elimination from Tokyo in 2021.

If the men in the track cycling team pursuit were unable to join the fight for the bronze medal, the French team Clara Copponi, Valentine Fortin, Marion Borras and Marie Le Net can still hope to finish third. To do so, they will have to dominate Australia and finish among the two best times of the six teams that will not compete for the gold medal (13:52, announced on France 2, before a possible final for the bronze at 19:17 (announced on France 2).

There will be no assurance of medals at the start of the day, but a discovery with the mixed marathon walk relay, one of the new events introduced for these Paris Olympic Games. This mixed relay replaces the 50 kilometer walk on the program and will be one of the curiosities of the day (7:30, announced on France 3). The French tandem Aurélien Quinion and Clémence Beretta will hope to make a good showing.

The three French teams to follow: men’s volleyball, men’s handball, women’s basketball

If you like team sports, you’re in for a treat, from 1:30 p.m. until mid-evening. The crazy day for the French teams will begin with the handball quarter-final against Germany (1:30 p.m., announced on France 3). The Tricolores will have to seriously step up their game in their quest for a double after Tokyo, and an unconvincing group stage.

The French women’s basketball team will follow (6:00 p.m., announced on France 3) for their quarter-final and the same match against Germany. Jean-Aimé Toupane’s players will seek to rely on their defensive strength, seen at the start of the tournament, and forget their narrow defeat against Australia at the end of the first phase.

The dessert will be very generous with a place in the final that will be played for the French volleyball players. The Blues in the semi-final face Italy (8:00 p.m., announced on France 3), the homeland of their coach Andrea Giani. The fear and the fantastic comeback against the Germans in the quarter-finals can serve as a springboard for Earvin Ngapeth and his team in the defense of their Tokyo title.

The full program and the finals of the day

The day will be very rich in potential great moments. Cyrian Ravet, seeded number 4 in taekwondo in the -58kg category (from 9:46 a.m., announced on France 2, final at 9:37 p.m.), and Mamadassa Sylla in the 67 kilos in Greco-Roman wrestling (11:49 a.m., announced on France 2) are real chances for French medals. The Marseille marina could also be the scene of a great show with the conclusion of the mixed multihull and mixed dinghy (if the weather is good, from 2:43 p.m., announced on France 3). Tim Mourniac and Lou Berthomieu on one side, Camille Lecointre and Jérémie Mion on the other are not in a favorable position for the podium before the medal races, which are often decisive.

The French men’s table tennis team will want to get closer to a possible trinket, in the event of a victory over Brazil (3:00 p.m., announced on France 2). Vincent Matheron will also try to qualify during the day and reach at least the park final (eliminatory rounds at 12:30 p.m., final at 5:30 p.m., announced in full on the digital channel France.tv Paris 2024, and on France 2). French golfer Céline Bouthier will make her debut in the competition from 9:00 a.m. (announced on France 3).

The athletics day will be just as busy. Cyréna Samba-Mayela will test herself during the 1er round of the 100 meters hurdles (10:15, announced on France 2). The Olympic champion of the 100 meters Noah Lyles will want to do the same with the competition, during the semi-finals of the 200 meters (20:02). Also to follow the final of the women’s pole vault with the Tricolores Ninon Chapelle and Marie-Julie Bonnin (18:15), of the men’s discus throw (20:25), of the men’s 400m (21:20), and of the men’s 3,000 meters steeplechase (21:43).
