Alexis Galarneau failed to qualify for the OBN main draw against Rinky Hijikata

The stadium was a quarter full and the cheers echoed as if it were full. Despite this dose of love, Alexis Galarneau was unable to qualify for the main draw of the National Bank Open on Tuesday.

The crowd favorite had started his tournament so well. A first qualifying match on Sunday had raised the hopes of the Laval player and his team. The second match had also started strongly with a set won 6-2.

Then, facing the tough Australian Rinky Hijikata, 74e in the ATP rankings, he blew a 4-1 lead to finish behind at 6-4. Rain then interrupted this match played on Monday with each side winning a game.

The night’s rest didn’t have the desired effect. Upon his return to the centre court at Jarry Park on Tuesday, Galarneau initially dominated. He pushed his racket until he took a 5-3 lead where he served for the win. His opponent then worked twice as hard, pushing back the balls sent deep and breaking the Quebecer on his serve.

The latter, letting a few cross balls slip, still attempted a spectacular dive in the last set to try to turn the tide. This effort was in vain, and the support of the public was not enough. Alexis Galarneau finally lost 7-6 in the last set.

The 25-year-old’s career, 233e world racket, is not finished yet in Montreal. He will be in the doubles game on Tuesday afternoon, alongside his playing partner Félix Auger-Aliassime.
