Cinemas record their “best July since 2011”, announces the CNC

“The Count of Monte Cristo” with Pierre Niney comes in first place in number of admissions in French cinemas.

The count of Monte Cristo stronger than Barbie And Oppenheimer ? French movie theaters have experienced “their best July since 2011”the National Center for Cinema and Image welcomed Tuesday, August 6 in a press release, even surpassing July 2023, marked by the success of the two American productions. The CNC attributes these good figures to the “success of the 2024 Cinema Festival which ran from June 30 to July 3 and reached a historic record of 4.55 million total admissions with three days of over a million admissions”. At total, 18.71 million tickets were sold in July 2024.

It’s definitely a French film, The count of Monte Cristowhich occupies first place in the ranking for the month: the adaptation of the classic by Alexandre Dumas, with Pierre Niney in the title role, was released on June 28. The animated film Inside Out 2 from Pixar and Disney studios came in second at the box office, followed by another family hit, Despicable Me 4, produced by Illumination Studios. Aimed at an older audience, Deadpool & WolverineMarvel’s latest production, comes in fourth.

Attendance in the first seven months of the year “is barely down compared to that of the first seven months of 2023”the press release continues. With 103.48 million admissions, attendance fell by 5.5% compared to the same period the previous year. Although the start of the year was difficult, French films were able to attract spectators: their market share is particularly high, notes the CNC, with 45.4% compared to 35.6% for American films. This can be explained (in addition to great successes such as that ofA little something extra) by the absence of many Hollywood films, postponed by the strike of American screenwriters and actors which ended at the beginning of the year.
